ROEE SAREL

Hi, I’m Prof. Dr. Roee Sarel—a leading expert in the law & economics of AI and sustainability transitions, serving as a junior professor of private law and law & economics at the Institute of Law & Economics, University of Hamburg. I also lecture at the Northern Institute of Technology Management and the Kühne Logistics University.

My research tackles the most pressing regulatory and economic challenges of our time: how should legal systems adapt to AI-driven decision-making? What economic mechanisms can drive effective climate policy? How do we design governance frameworks for emerging technologies while ensuring sustainable development?

I investigate these questions using game theory, behavioral experiments, and empirical analysis—always focused on practical solutions for real-world challenges. My work addresses critical issues such as the regulation and liability of AI systems, smart contracts, corporate sustainability due diligence, and Judicial Decision-making,
My career trajectory combines academic research with hands-on experience as a litigation and banking lawyer and blockchain entrepreneur. I hold a doctorate in economics from the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management, plus dual degrees in law (LL.B.) and business (MBA, finance & banking) from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
